With the onset of the novel coronavirus, a lot of discussions and talks have revolved around the role of immunity and its possible link to COVID-19 infection. Given the fact that the virus affects people in a very distinct manner – depending on the age, gender and pre-existing medical conditions – it has become extremely important to understand how and for how long our immune system fights off the virus. That said, a recent study has claimed that our immune system has the potential to ‘remember’ COVID-19 infections for at least 6 months, which in turn keeps reinfection at bay.

02/4Immunity in COVID-19 patients

According to different studies, COVID-19 immunity can be different for everybody. While some people have a stronger immunity against the virus, making them less susceptible to the deadly virus, others may have a higher chance of severe COVID-19 infections, considering they have a weaker immunity. Then there are people who possess COVID antibodies without having any history of the illness in the first place.

Recent researches suggest that immunity in COVID-19 infected patients last for a long while. However, it is yet to be fully determined as to how long does the immune system actually remember the infection.

03/4Study: Immune system ‘remembers’ COVID infection for at least 6 months

As per a recent study published in Journal Nature on Monday by researchers in the United States and Switzerland, “The observation that memory B cell responses do not decay after 6.2 months, but instead continue to evolve, is strongly suggestive that individuals who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 could mount a rapid and effective response to the virus upon re-exposure.”

The study observed dozens of COVID-recovered patients and observed that while their antibodies may dwindle over time, they maintained levels of specific memory B cells, which plays an important role in fending off the virus. 87 people participated in the research and it was found that while the antibodies decreased over a period of one month to 6 months, remained the same.

Another study published in the journal Science this month suggested that most parts of the immune system, including protein spike specific memory B cells, could identify and continue to respond to the virus for at least eight months.

04/4Role of Memory B cells in preventing COVID-19

When it comes to preventing or fighting off SARs-COV-2 infections, memory B cells play an extremely vital role. They are a type of white blood cells that are created in lymph nodes or spleens during an infection. While they allow rapid and strong antibody-related responses to re-infection by the same virus or bacteria, they can prevent COVID-19 reinfection too.

The recent study also found that while the virus eliminating antibodies deplete over time, levels of specific memory B cells remained unchanged over time. It is said that these cells can identify the deadly pathogen and can, in case of reinfection, trigger the immune system to increase the production of antibodies.
