In a heartfelt letter to the world posted today on social media, Elliot Page announced that he is trans. Elliot, formely Ellen Page, has been a staple of Hollywood productions for decades, ranging from roles in the X-MEN franchise as Kitty Pryde, Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION, and most recently as Vanya Hargreeves on Netflix’s hit superhero series The Umbrella Academy.
This announcement is clearly a substantial one for the actor and you can tell from the words in his announcement as to how life-changing this step has been especially in light of the challenges the transgender community has faced in recent years. Elliot Page has long been an activist for the LGBTQ community and married his partner Emma Portner since 2018. The transgender community has become much more vocal and visible in Hollywood in recent years and Page’s announcement is the first by such a high-profile actor. While personal politics may divide some of you who read this, hopefully, Page’s announcement will help fans struggling with their own identities find inspiration.
Not long after Page announced his transition to the world, Netflix’s official Twitter account responded to the actor’s bravery with love and support by tweeting “So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT! Can’t wait to see you return in season 3,” in reference to Elliot’s personal news as well as the forthcoming third season of The Umbrella Academy.
