Introducing the new category in the guidelines for selection and nomination of candidates against central pool of MBBS seats, the health ministry said the seats may be allocated for wards of Covid warriors who lost their lives due to Covid-19 or died on account of Covid-related duty.
“This will honour the solemn sacrifice of all Covid warriors who served with selfless dedication for the cause of duty and humanity,” health minister Harsh Vardhan said.
Officials told TOI that this will initially be a pilot for the academic year 2020-21, but there are plans to extend the reservation if there are eligible candidates. The scheme will use the same definition of Covid warrior that was laid down by the Centre for the insurance package of Rs 50 lakh for such people who died while combating the pandemic.
Covid warriors include all public healthcare providers including community health workers. Private hospital staff and retired volunteers, contracted and daily wage will come under the category. It also includes those working in central or state AIIMS and institutes of national importance.
